When Communities Work Together: How You Can Help Power the Edgewood Back-to-School Supply Drive

There’s a simple truth I’ve learned from years of building organizations: nothing meaningful gets built alone. Not a championship team, not a thriving business, and certainly not a strong community. The moments I’m proudest of are never the ones where I did it all myself — they’re the moments when a whole community decided to show up for something bigger than any one person.

That’s exactly the spirit behind our Back-to-School Supply Drive happening right now at Edgewood Community Center, 200 Edgewood Circle, Ninety Six, South Carolina. And it’s a perfect example of what’s possible when a community decides to work together.

Main Point #1: Strong Communities Are Built One Contribution at a Time

Nobody can single-handedly make sure every child in a community has the school supplies they need. But when a local business donates backpacks, a family drops off notebooks, and a volunteer spends an afternoon sorting donations, something powerful happens — collective impact.

This is the model we’ve followed since founding Edgewood Community Center in 2016. We didn’t build a program that’s served 3,000+ youth and distributed 10,000+ meals by relying on one big gesture. We built it through thousands of small ones, stacked on top of each other, year after year. The Back-to-School Supply Drive works the same way. Every donation matters, no matter the size

Main Point #2: When Neighbors Show Up for Neighbors, Everyone Rises

There’s a ripple effect that happens when communities pull together. A parent who receives supplies for their child this week may be the same person organizing a coat drive next winter. A student who starts the school year prepared and confident is more likely to stay engaged and succeed. Community support isn’t just about meeting an immediate need — it plants seeds for the next act of generosity.

This is why initiatives like our supply drive matter so much beyond the obvious. We’re not just handing out backpacks and pencils. We’re reinforcing the idea that this community takes care of its own, and that idea spreads.

Main Point #3: Supporting Local Drives Is Leadership in Action

You don’t need a title, a budget, or a big platform to lead. Donating supplies, volunteering an hour to help organize them, or simply spreading the word about a drive like this — that’s leadership. It’s the same principle I write about in my upcoming book, Opportunity Creates Legacy: true impact comes from the small, consistent actions that add up over time.

If you’ve ever wondered how you could contribute to building a stronger Ninety Six and Lakelands community, this is one of the simplest and most direct ways to start.

The Back-to-School Supply Drive is bigger than school supplies — it’s a reflection of what our community can accomplish when we choose to work together instead of separately. Every backpack, notebook, and donated dollar represents someone deciding that a child in our community matters.
